SIMON THWAITES
Registered Psychologist & Clinical Psychology Registrar (adult and adolescents (16 years+)
Simon is a registered Psychologist and Clinical Psychology Registrar who brings a thoughtful and exploratory approach to therapy. He is passionate about helping patients understand themselves more deeply and see the world and their place in it, from new perspectives.
Simon works with adults and older adolescents (16 years+) across a wide range of presentations, including anxiety, depression, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, personality vulnerabilities, eating disorders, ADHD, phobias and emotional dysregulation. He has experience working with patients in both private practice and hospital settings and is confident supporting individuals with complex and long-standing difficulties.
Simon draws from an integrative therapeutic framework, combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and short and long-term psychodynamic therapy. He also has training and experience in Prolonged Exposure Therapy for trauma. His practice style is reflective, evidence-based, and tailored to the unique needs of each individual, balancing structured, goal-directed work with deeper exploration of emotional and relational patterns.
Before becoming a psychologist, Simon spent over 15 years in corporate, government, and not for profit roles, including serving as a Director at a London-based consultancy working with major global organisations. This background gives him a nuanced understanding of the pressures of leadership, high performance environments, and the personal cost of sustained professional stress, which he integrates thoughtfully into his clinical work.
In addition to his clinical practice, Simon is actively involved in cutting-edge research through QIMR Berghofer’s Clinical Brain Networks Group, where he contributes to studies on the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder and treatment resistant depression.
Simon holds degrees from Oxford University, Monash University, the University of Queensland, and Queensland University of Technology, where he completed his Master of Clinical Psychology with Distinction.
Simon is currently accepting new patients privately or with a referral and offers both short and long-term therapy, providing a warm and collaborative space for patients to explore their experiences, develop insight, and move toward meaningful and sustained change.
